Dunedin - January 9 to 13, 2007
We decided just to stay for 4 days in Dunedin because it seemed to offer less activities for us and there were so many other great places in New Zealand to visit. On our trip down the east coast of the South Island, we took a small side trip to check out the Moreaki Boulders. According to The Rough Guide to New Zealand, "these 2 metre spherical boulders artfully littering the tideline were once regarded as Maori baskets or gourds".
Our main activities in Christchurch were driving out on the Otago Peninsula to see the Albatross Colony and the Penguin Place (home of the rare yellow-eyed penguin), visiting the Dunedin Botanic Gardens and playing golf at the St Clair Golf Club.
As you can see in a number of the photos, it was a rather wet few days. Fortunately the weather improved on the day before we left and for the most part that was all the rain we had to endure. The locals said that they've noticed that summer starts later each year and that now, the good weather doesn't arrive untril February or March. I suspect that being fairly far south also influenced what we saw--this was as far south as we travelled, in spite of Ray's encouraging us to go to Invercargill and play the southern most links golf course in the world.
Below are some of the shots we took during the 4 days.
