The Mountain Man Golf Adventure - August 23 to 30, 2003

This is the continuing saga of the golf adventures of John Pullam, Jim Lackey, Terry Cox and Roy Harman, first immortalized in The Maui Golf Week. This time we were accompanied by four more fanatics from Jim and Terry's ISM-BC BC Systems Corp days: Bruce Clark, Lawrie Dunn, Al Ferguson and Denis Meier. The plan was to gather everybody in Victoria, drive up island in Roy's and Bruce's vehicles, stay at Terry's ski chalet at Mount Washington, and play a different golf course each day.

SandbaggerThe award for sandbagging was won, no contest, by Al. The week began with his insistence that he was a lousy golfer and therefore required a handicap over 30 or he wouldn't play. Being kind, generous and good sportsmen, we granted his wish. On the first hole of the first round, he hit the obligatory 2 duff shots, but after that he never looked back. His game improved round by round, faster than we could negotiate his handicap down. And during each round we were treated to "I've never played this well in my life" as he whupped us and took more of our money. Al won low net with an average round of 67.4!!

stumped Terry was his usual gracious self, giving us the use of his place, and demonstrating his legendary golf skills. In this shot, Terry demonstrates the lost art of hanging your boys over a stump while you wack a 5-iron at a little white ball. Ordinary golfers would have taken the one stroke penalty or used a foot wedge. But not our Terry ... he saved the stroke and got away with a bogey. Fortunately he was not required to perform any manly acts immediately after the game. (Click on the picture to see it full size.) Unfortunately, all of the stress on Terry to keep the boys from wrecking his real estate took its toll on his golf game, winning most honest golfer for the week.
